Troy High by Shana Norris

Here we are in Troy, New York. Did you know New York has other cities with Greek names: Athens, Ithaca, Syracuse and Troy?! And wouldn’t you think that Greek heritage might spring up at least once in a while? Sadly, no. Until this book! How cool is it that a teen novel might bring the battle between Troy and Sparta (yes, there’s even a Sparta, NY) to a high school football field. Clever, right? But, uh, well, when folks see this cover they think it’s just about our local public high school. But somewhere out there someone gets the connection. I’m sure of it. This may not be the most highbrow of books but it is another vehicle to bring some history into our present experience, maybe even getting us to read a bit more about the past. Maybe even learn from past mistakes? Gasp!

Egg on my face: The historic city of Troy is actually NOT in Greece but in Turkey and later "Ilium" was founded by the Emperor Augusts (Roman). The Greek references come from the "Iliad." Homer put it on the map.
