The Orphanmaster by Jean Zimmerman is a fascinating look at the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam right before it was ceded to the British. When orphans start disappearing from town, Blandine van Couvering, a young Dutch she-merchant, and Edward Drummond, an English adventurer and spy, join forces to discover who (or what) is behind it. Whether or not you are familiar with pre-Revolutionary New York, you will enjoy this historical mystery.
PS–Who knew that the Dutch afforded women so much more freedom than the English did? Just one of the interesting tidbits to be found in this novel…..
